Canadian betting guide

Baseball betting, with the details that matter.

Baseball is a numbers game, and that makes it one of the most rewarding sports for patient, analytical bettors. Major League Baseball runs from late March to the World Series in late October or early November, with every one of its 30 teams playing 162 regular-season games. For Canadian bettors, the Toronto Blue Jays give the season a home-team focus, and with games almost every day for seven months, there is no shortage of betting opportunities.

Introduction

This guide explains how baseball betting works in Canada, the key MLB markets, what makes baseball different from other sports and the strategies serious baseball bettors use.

Can You Bet on MLB in Canada?

Yes. Single-game sports betting has been legal in Canada since August 2021. Canadians can bet on MLB through regulated private sportsbooks in Ontario and Alberta, provincial platforms such as PlayNow, Mise-o-jeu, PlayAlberta and Proline, or other options depending on the province. Check our Province-by-Province Guide for the details where you live.

Why Baseball Is Different

Baseball has a few features that set it apart from hockey, football and basketball:

  • Starting pitchers dominate. One player, the starting pitcher, has more influence on a single game than any individual player in most other sports.
  • High variance. Even the best teams lose about 40% of their games, so underdogs win often.
  • Huge sample sizes. With 162 games per team, there is plenty of data, and short-term results are often noise.
  • Ballparks vary. Unlike rinks or fields, MLB stadiums have different dimensions and conditions, which change how many runs are scored.

MLB Betting Markets

Moneyline

The moneyline is the main way to bet baseball. You pick which team wins. A favourite might be listed at 1.65 in decimal odds (or -155 in American odds), while the underdog sits at 2.35 (+135). Because games are often decided by one or two runs, the moneyline is a natural fit for baseball.

Run Line

The run line is baseball's version of a point spread, usually set at 1.5 runs. The favourite at -1.5 must win by two or more runs, while the underdog at +1.5 covers if it wins or loses by just one. The run line offers bigger odds on favourites and shorter odds on underdogs.

Totals

Bet on whether both teams combined score over or under a number of runs, typically between 7 and 11. Sportsbooks often adjust the price rather than the line, so you may see over 8.5 at 1.87 and under 8.5 at 1.95.

First Five Innings

First five innings (F5) bets settle on the score after five innings. They focus on the starting pitchers and remove the bullpen, which is often the least predictable part of a game. F5 moneylines, run lines and totals are widely available.

Player Props

Pitcher props include strikeouts, outs recorded, hits allowed and earned runs. Batter props cover hits, total bases, home runs, runs batted in and stolen bases. Strikeout and total bases props are among the most popular.

Inning Bets

Many sportsbooks offer bets on individual innings, such as whether a run will be scored in the first inning, commonly known as "YRFI" (yes run first inning) or "NRFI" (no run first inning).

Futures

Futures include the World Series winner, pennant winners, division winners, season win totals and awards such as MVP, Cy Young and Rookie of the Year. For more on long-term bets, see our Futures Betting Explained guide.

Live Betting

Live baseball betting updates between pitches and innings. Baseball's slower pace gives you time to assess pitch counts, bullpen usage and matchups before placing a bet.

How Pitcher Changes Affect Your Bets

Because starting pitchers matter so much, sportsbooks have special rules for pitcher changes. Some books let you choose between "listed pitchers," where your bet is cancelled if either named starter does not start, and "action," where your bet stands regardless. Many online sportsbooks in Canada default to action on moneylines, but rules vary, so check your sportsbook's house rules. Pitcher props are void if that pitcher does not start.

MLB Betting Strategy

Go Beyond ERA

ERA (earned run average) is the most famous pitching stat, but it is heavily influenced by luck and defence. Better indicators of future performance include FIP (fielding independent pitching), xERA, strikeout rate, walk rate and hard-contact rate allowed. A pitcher with a high ERA but strong underlying numbers may be due to improve, and the market can be slow to adjust.

Evaluate Bullpens

Modern starters rarely pitch deep into games, so relievers often cover the last three or four innings. A tired or weak bullpen can blow leads late. Check recent bullpen workload: relievers who pitched several days in a row may not be available.

Factor In the Ballpark

Ballparks have a major effect on scoring. Coors Field in Denver is the most famous hitter-friendly park because the ball travels farther at altitude. Other parks suppress runs with large outfields or heavy marine air. Rogers Centre in Toronto has a retractable roof, so check whether it is open or closed, since conditions can differ.

Watch Wind and Weather

Wind blowing out increases home runs and totals, while wind blowing in reduces them. Hot weather helps the ball carry, and cold April and October games tend to be lower scoring.

Check Lineups and Splits

Lineups are usually released a few hours before first pitch. Many hitters perform differently against left-handed and right-handed pitchers, and managers often rest regulars, especially in day games after night games.

Back Underdogs Selectively

Because baseball is so unpredictable, you do not need to win most of your bets to be profitable. Hitting 45% of bets at average odds of 2.30 (+130) can produce long-term profit. Betting heavy favourites every day, on the other hand, requires a very high win rate to break even.

Know the Umpire

Home plate umpires have measurable tendencies. Some call a larger strike zone, which favours pitchers and strikeout unders on hitters, while others call a tight zone that helps hitters and overs. Umpire assignments are public before games.

Shop for Lower Margins

Some sportsbooks offer tighter baseball prices than others. Over a long season, small differences in odds add up. Holding accounts at more than one sportsbook in your province helps you get the best price. Our Line Shopping and Closing Line Value guide explains how.

Betting on the Toronto Blue Jays

As Canada's only MLB team, the Blue Jays attract a lot of betting interest from Canadian fans. That popularity can sometimes move prices, especially for big games and playoff runs. Betting on your favourite team is fine, but try to judge each game on its merits: the pitching matchup, bullpen health and recent form rather than loyalty. Some bettors deliberately avoid betting on their favourite team because it is hard to stay objective.

MLB Postseason Betting

The postseason runs through October with a wild card round, division series, league championship series and the World Series. Playoff baseball is different from the regular season: teams shorten their pitching rotations, lean on their best starters and use top relievers earlier and more often. Off days between games let aces pitch more, which often makes playoff totals lower than regular-season games between the same teams.

Common MLB Betting Mistakes

  • Laying heavy prices on big favourites every day.
  • Judging pitchers only by their win-loss record or ERA.
  • Betting before lineups and weather are confirmed.
  • Overreacting to short winning or losing streaks.
  • Ignoring bullpen fatigue in late-game bets.
  • Chasing long-shot home run props as a main strategy.

MLB Betting FAQ

What does NRFI mean?

NRFI stands for "no run first inning." It is a bet that neither team scores in the first inning. The opposite bet is YRFI, "yes run first inning."

What happens if a game is rained out or shortened?

Most sportsbooks consider a game official for moneyline purposes after five innings, or four and a half if the home team is leading. Totals and run lines usually require a full game. Postponed games are typically void unless completed within a set period. Check your sportsbook's rules.

Do extra innings count?

Yes. Full-game bets include extra innings. First five innings bets do not.

What is the best bet for baseball beginners?

First five innings moneylines are a good starting point because they focus on the starting pitchers, which are the easiest factor to research.

Are MLB betting winnings taxed in Canada?

For recreational bettors, gambling winnings are generally not taxable in Canada. Professional bettors may be treated differently, so consult a tax professional if betting is your main income.

Baseball's daily schedule makes it easy to overbet. Set a budget and use your sportsbook's limits. Read our Bankroll Management guide for help sizing your bets.
